Mar

There’s a history between March
and the cherry blossom in Central Park
You can tell by the way he pulls back
when she starts to open up
and lets February interject
going on too long with his icy breath
until she politely excuses herself
And it’s obvious he misses her
although he pretends otherwise
for a week or two
but eventually, he’ll send her a signal
and she’ll return
cloaked in satin, so radiant
that the old men can’t help
but look up from their checkers
and remember a time
when they compared the girls
beneath the comfortably lined faces
feeding pigeons from the bench
to her as she danced around them
floating on air
He won’t be able to hide it
will pin his gaze to her
until she shines
but his hesitance
has always been his downfall
The wind will come rushing in
to sweep her off her feet
and he’ll depart, humbled
and alone

And as another who loves
so quietly
so well
I will smile in sad empathy
as April, ever the sensitive soul
weeps for us both
